The Fairfield University softball team will host Quinnipiac University in a non-conference game on Thursday, April 19 at Alumni Softball Field. Game time is slated for 3:30 pm.
The Stags (21-22 overall) return home after playing four conference games in upstate New York, winning three of those outings. Fairfield opened last weekend with a sweep of Canisius College, posting 4-2 and 2-1 wins. After a rain out on Sunday, the team resumed its road trip with a split against Niagara, winning the first game by a 6-5 count in 10 innings but dropping the second contest, 2-1.
Tiffany Lawson went four of 11 in the four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games and scored the game-winning run against Niagara. She started the rally with a triple and came home on a wild pitch. Lawson raised her batting average to .272 for the season and registered her first extra base hit of the year with that triple.
Alli Wigand took over the team lead by going on a torrid streak that saw her record seven hits in 15 at-bats over a five-game stretch. She brings a .305 batting average into today's game, one point better than
Kristen Filicia's .304 mark. Wigand hit in all five of those games before seeing her streak come to a halt in the second game of the Niagara doubleheader. She remains tied for the team lead with 25 RBI, a number shared with
Rae Ball.
Ball turned in another solid week by batting .267 and picking up a pair of wins in the pitching circle. The sophomore scored four runs in the five-game week and hit her team-best seventh home run of the season. As a pitcher, Ball struck out 16 hitters in 16 innings. She owns a 9-9 overall record, while teammate
Rebecca Trott brings a 12-11 mark into this game.
Quinnipiac has won 22 of 34 games this season, including a 2-0 victory over the Stags on April 4. Heather Schwartzburg and Katie Alfiere combined for the shutout with Alfiere getting the win after pitching 4.1 innings of relief.
Alex Alba is the team's top hitter with a .353 batting average in her 33 starts this season. She is also the team leader in doubles (12), home runs (4), and extra base hits (17). Christy Cabrera is next in line with a .291 hitting percentage, posting a team-high 16 walks.
The Bobcats have used four pitchers during the season with Schwartzburg leading the way at 14-4 overall with a 1.58 ERA. She has fanned 146 battters in 132 innings pitched, an average of 7.7 batters per seven innings. Alfiere owns a 6-2 record with a 2.68 ERAtossing two complete games and hurling a shutout.
