NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. –
Tiffany Lawson had a hit in the opener and two hits in the second game in addition to scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10
th inning of game one as the Fairfield University softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The twin bill was a makeup of yesterday's scheduled date which was cancelled due to heavy rain.
Fairfield took control of the first game by scoring five runs in the first three innings, starting with a single run in the top of the first. The rally started when
Kimi Kurata recorded a one-out single and came home after
Lauren Liseth hit an RBI triple. Fairfield tacked on four runs in the top of the third inning, all of which came home on
Rae Ball's grand slam. The homer drove home Liseth,
Alli Wigand, and
Sammy Ruffolo.
Niagara put itself right back into the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the big blow being a three-run home run by Jaclyn Russell with one out. The Purple Eagles tied the game in the seventh inning as Jessica Hitchcock and Becky Zill put together back-to-back doubles with two outs in the inning.
Fairfield won the game in the top of the 10
th inning after Lawson ripped a two-out triple and came home on a wild pitch. Pitcher
Rebecca Trott earned the win by going distance and allowing 11 hits and fanning nine batters.
In the second game, it was the Purple Eagles who struck in the first inning, taking advantage of an error that led to two unearned runs. Jennifer Hare drove home both runs with a one-out triple. Those runs stood up until the top of the sixth inning when Fairfield put its only run of the game on the scoreboard.
Kristen Filicia was at the heart of the rally with a one-out double to right-center field. She advanced to third base after a wild pitch. Kurata brought the run home with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Stags threatened in the seventh inning when
Alli Wigand and Lawson walked to put runners on first and second. The rally ended on a strikeout, giving Niagara the win and a split in the doubleheader.
Fairfield will take the field for its next game on Thursday afternoon when it hosts Quinnipiac University at 3:30 pm.
