Softball Sweeps Canisius In MAAC Twinbill

BUFFALO,. N.Y. -- A couple of key hits led the Fairfield University softball team to a sweep of Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. The Stags won the first game by a 2-1 count, and followed up with a 4-2 victory in the second contest. The two wins improved Fairfield's overall record to 20-21 and its MAAC mark to 3-3.

Fairfield struck early in the opener, something that it has done all season long. After a ground out, Kimi Kurata and Lauren Liseth each followed with a base hit to put runners on first and second. Alli Wigand drove both runners home with a double to right field. Those two runs would be the only runs that the offense would put on the board, but they were enough for starting pitcher Rebecca Trott.

The right hander scattered five hits in her seven innings of work, also fanning five hitters and walking one. She improved to 11-11 overall with the victory.

In the second game, Canisius secured an early lead with a run in the second inning. The Golden Griffs put together a pair of hits and took advantage of a Fairfield error to grab the 1-0 edge. Fairfield scored a big inning in the fourth frame, as Kurata, Wigand, and Rae Ball each singled to load the bases with one out. Sammy Ruffolo cleared the bases with a triple to left field on the first pitch thrown to her. Tiffany Lawson closed the scoring with a single down the right field line to chase Ruffolo home for a 4-1 lead.

The Golden Griffs added a run in the fifth inning, courtesy of an error and a double. Fairfield pitcher Rae Ball would move above .500 with the win, improving to 9-8 overall. She yielded five hits and four walks while striking out five hitters to earn the win.

Fairfield closes out the two-day trip to upstate New York when it takes on Niagara University on Sunday afternoon.
