Alli Wigand and
Rae Ball each hit a solo home run to account for both of Fairfield University's runs in the Stags 8-2 loss to Sacred Heart University in a non-conference softball game.
The Stags jumped out to 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Wigand led off with a solo homer over the left field fence. Pitcher
Rebecca Trott made that lead stand for three innings, but eventually yielded to
Emily Orr in the fourth inning. Orr lasted 1.2 innings and surrendered five runs before leaving the game.
The Pioneers scored four runs in the fourth inning with Nikki Surkes sending home the first run with an RBI single. Nicole Sidor followed with an RBI double to put Sacred Heart in the lead at 2-1. Jade Bowins made it 3-1 with an RBI ground out, while Liz Tsipouras finished the inning with an RBI single that gave Sacred Heart a three-run lead.
Fairfield cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ball launched a two-out home run over the right field fence. The Pioneers got that run back in the top of the fifth courtesy of Alyssa Garza's RBI double. The score went to 7-2 in the top of the sixth inning after Tsipouras' run scoring ground out and Rudloff's RBI double to left center.
Taylor Lane earned the win in relief of starter Tsiouras, going two innings while allowing just one hit and one run with two strikeouts.
