Lauren Liseth and
Kimi Kurata each recorded four hits to lead the Fairfield University softball team to a sweep over the University of Hartford. The Stags came back to win game one by a 3-2 score and followed up with a 10-4 win in the second game.
Hartford jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Fairfield rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning.
Sammy Ruffolo started the inning with a single and went to third when
Rae Ball's grounder was mishandled. With runners at the corners,
Tiffany Lawson loaded the bases when the junior drew a walk.
Sam Frungillo tied the score with a base hit that sent Ruffolo home.
The Hawks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, a lead which stood until the Stags' final at-bat. In the seventh inning, the first two batters were retired on a grounder and a pop up, respectively.
Kristen Filicia kept the game going when she secured a walk. Kurata followed with a two-run homer over the center field fence to give Fairfield the lead at 3-2.
Rebecca Trott earned the win by striking out seven batters and scattering six hits which allowed her to post her 10
th win of the season.
In the nightcap, the Stags never trailed as they opened the game with four runs in the top of the first inning. Liseth started the rally with a base hit and came home one batter later after
Alli Wigand stroked a double to right center. Ball added an RBI double and
Tiffany Lawson completed the scoring with a two-run single.
Hartford nearly erased that fast start by plating three runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning off starting pitcher Ball. The Hawks used one hit and three walks along with a costly error to score their runs.
The Stags built on its lead with a single run in the second inning, courtesy of Filicia stealing home as part of a double steal, and three more runs in the third inning that pushed the Stags advantage to 8-3. Lawson and
Nikki Osofsky each picked up an RBI in the inning.
Liseth played a role in the team's final two runs when she chased home the team's ninth run with a single in the fourth and completed the scoring when she stole home in the sixth frame.
Fairfield returns home on Thursday when it hosts Sacred Heart University for a single game at Alumni Softball Field.
