TOWSON, Md. -- After splitting a pair of games on the opening day, the Fairfield University softball team driopped a pair of games on the second day of the Towson Invitational. The Stags dropped their first game to Providence, falling by an 8-0 count in five innings. In the nightcap, the host school stopped the Stags by a 2-0 count.
The first game saw the Stags smack four hits in the game, all singles over the five-inning game.
Mikayla Shumate registered two hits, while
Kimi Kurata and Wigand each posted a base hit in the game. The Friars scored six runs in the fourth inning to blow a 1-0 game into a 7-0 lead. Providence added one more in the fifth inning to finish off the scoring.
The second game saw Fairfield outhit the Tigers, but it could not find the timely hit to drive in a run. The Stags left six on base in the seven inning game.
Rae Ball was the only Fairfield player with more than one hit, stroking a pair of singles, and also pitched all six innings. The right hander scattered four hits and fanned four batters in her outing. The team's biggest offensive threat came in the fourth inning when
Lauren Liseth walked and took second base on
Alli Wigand's single. But the inning ended when the next two hitters were retired on a fly out and a ground out.
Towson scored a single run in the second inning after a walk, a double, and a base hit combined for the game's first run. The Tigers tacked on another run in the sixth frame, plating the insurance run on a lead-off home run.
Fairfield returns to the diamond on March 11 when it begins a four-day stay at the Rebel Games in Forida. After that stay, the team will head to the University of South Florida for a tournament. The Stags open home play on March 21 when they host the University at Stony Brook for a doubleheader which begins at 2 pm.
