FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Stags hit a home run in the first inning of both ends of today's doubleheader to help the team sweep Yale University at Alumni Softball Field. Fairfield won the first game by a 5-4 count and followed up with a 6-2 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Fairfield posted four runs in the bottom of the first inning to set up starting pitcher Rebecca Trott with a comfortable lead. Kristen Filicia started the inning with single up the middle and took second base following a sacrifice bunt by Mikayla Shumate. Lauren Liseth followed with a line-drive single to center field for a 1-0 lead. Alli Wigand sent Liseth to second with a single, bringing Rae Ball to the plate. The sophomore sent a three-run home run over the left field fence to push the score to 4-0.

Yale scored its first run in the top of the fifth when Jennifer Ong singled up the middle to bring home Riley Hughes to make the score 4-1. Fairfield added a run in the sixth inning courtesy of Flicia's RBI single which proved to be an important run. Yale rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run at third base before Trott ended the threat with a ground out.  Trott earned her eighth win of the season by going the distance.

In the second game, Yale jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, a rally started by Ong's single to left field. The Bulldogs took the lead when Meg Johnson grounded out to second base, sending home the game's first run. Fairfield took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Liseth's sacrifice fly and Wigand's solo home run to make it a 2-1 game.

Fairfield tacked on three runs in the fourth inning as Tiffany Lawson and Mikayla Shumate each stroked an RBI single and Ficilia scored the last run of the inning off a wild pitch. Yale cut into the lead with a single run in the top of the fifth inning after Sarah Onofato drilled an RBI single that made the score 5-2. Fairfield regained its four-run lead in the bottom of the inning as Sammy Ruffolo's RBI double chased home Rachel Beaudoin, who came in as a pinch runner for Kimi Kurata.

Ball earned the victory which evened up her record at 6-6 by pitching a complete game.

The Stags return to the diamond on Saturday, March 31 when they host Iona College in their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener. The doubleheader starts at 1 pm.
