NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped a pair of road games to Central Connecticut State University on Tuesday, falling by a 2-0 and 8-5 scores. The Stags held the lead two times in the second game, but could not hold on against the Blue Devils.
The opening game was a classic pitchers' dual as the game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Both teams had scoring chances, but the starting pitchers always seemed to find a way to work out of the jams. The Stags had their best opportunity in the top of the sixth inning when
Kristen Filicia led off by reaching base on an error. Mikayla Schumate picked up an infield hit that sent Filicia to second base.
Lauren Liseth pushed a bunt that moved the runners to second and third. However the next two batters were retired to end the threat.
Central Connecticut finally broke the scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottomof the inning as the Blue Devils put together three hits in the inning which resulted in two runs. Alyssa McCoart brought home the two runs with a single through the right side of the infield.
In the second game, Fairfield opened the game with two unearned runs with
Rae Ball picking up an RBI in the inning following her single. The score was pushed to 3-0 in the top of the second inning when
Nikki Osofsky led off with a base hit. After being sacrificed to second, Osofsky came home courtesy of Filicia's base hit. Central Connecticut nearly erased the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning following a solo homer and an RBI double.
The Stags added a run in the top of the third inning as Ball's RBI double chased
Alli Wigand home after she was hit by a pitch. The Blue Devils took their first lead with three runs in the third inning, making the score 5-4.
Lauren Liseth's RBI single in the fifth frame tied the game at 5-5. Central Connecticut ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as a three-run walk-off home run by Nicole Springer made the score 8-5. All three of those runs were unearned.
Fairfield returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Yale University at Alumni Softball Diamond.
