PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Fairfield University softball team picked up a split against Providence College, winning the first game by a 5-3 count before dropping a 4-2 decision in the second game.
In the opener, Fairfield fell behind 2-1 before mounting a rally in the sixth and seventh innings. The Stags tied the game in the sixth when
Alli Wigand hit a solo home run. The team completed the comeback in the seventh inning with three runs.
Mikayla Shumate brought home the first run with a base hit, while
Rae Ball followed with a two-run single to complete the scoring.
Ball went the distance to earn the win, allowing eight hits and three earned runs as she fanned two hitters to earn the victory in the pitching circle.
The second game did not provide any comeback for the Stags as the Friars scored three runs in the second inning to take control of the game. Fairfield took the early lead with a run in the first inining as
Lauren Liseth drew a two-out walk, stole second, and came home following
Alli Wigand's RBI single.
The Friars plated three runs in the second inning when the team opened the frame with three straight walks.. Providence tied the game with a base hit, took the lead with a bases loaded walk, and pushed the score to 3-1 with another base hit. Fairfield cut into the lead when Liseth reached on an error to star the inning and came home eventually on
Tiffany Lawson's single.
Providence closed off the scoring in the fifth inning following a sacrifice fly.
Rebecca Trott pitched the first five innings for Fairfield before yielding to
Emily Orr. Orr pitched a scoreless inning in relief, allowing no base runners with one strikeout.
