Stags Return To Win Column Wtih 6-2 Triumph Over U

Box Score

Rebecca Trott allowed just two hits over five innings of work to lead the Fairfield University softball team to a 6-2 win over the University of Connecticut in Fairfield this afternoon.  The Stags improve to 11-12 with the victory, while the Huskies fall to 7-11.

Trott was perfect the first time through the order and finished with three strikeouts as she improve to 4-3 on the year.  Rae Ball tossed the final two innings to pick up her second save, fanning two and walking none.

After retiring UConn in order in the first inning the Stags wasted little time in getting their own bats going. Mikayla Shumate and Lauren Liseth reached on fielder choices, after Kristen Filicia lead off with an infield single.  Alli Wigand followed with a double down the left field line to plate two runs.  She would advance to third on an error on a ball put in play by Sammy Ruffolo and would score on a double steal.

The Stags added a run in their half of the second inning as well as Brianna Levick worked out a one-out walk.  She scored from first on Filicia's double to right center field to give the Stags a 4-0 edge. UConn got its first run in the top of the fourth as Jennifer Ward walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a double by Amy Vaughan.  Tiffany Lawson picked the ball off the warning track and Levick complete a perfect relay to third to get Vaughan trying to stretch her hit into a triple.

Wigand got the Stags started in the home portion of the fifth with a double to left field.  Rachel Beaudoin pinch ran and scored when Sammy Ruffolo singled through the left side.  Ruffolo would come around in the next at-bat as Nikki Osofsky doubled to left center, giving the Stags a 6-1 edge. Connecticut plated a run in the sixth as Vaughan doubled home Mariss Guches, but Ball worked around a one-out single in the seventh to end the game.

Filicia finished 3-4 with an RBI for the Stags, while Wigand drove in two with a 2-3 day and plated a run.  Six different Fairfield players scored on the afternoon with four contributing at least one RBI.

Lauren Duggan took the loss for Connecticut, allowing four runs, two earned, in 1.1 innings of work.  Ali Adelman fanned three in her 3.2 innings in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits.  Katelyn Callahan worked a perfect sixth, striking out two.  Vaughan was the only Husky with multiple hits, both doubles, and drove in both runs.

Fairfield is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Providence for a non-conference double-header.
