Softball Drops A Twinbill To Stony Brook In Home O

The Fairfield University softball team suffered a double-header sweep at the hands of Stony Brook University this afternoon, falling 6-5 and 2-0.

Nikki Osofsky was 4-5 with an RBI, and Alli Wigand added three hits, including a double, and both had an RBI and a run scored.  Sammy Ruffolo legged out a triple in the opener, and was one of five players to score a run in that contest.

Rae Ball allowed just four hits in the second game for the Stags, striking out four and walking just one. Taylor Chain scattered six hits over seven innings in that game for Stony Brook, and struck out three while walking none.  Rebecca Trott took the loss in the opener, striking out five, but giving up five runs on nine hits in five innings of work.  Emily Orr threw the final two innings and gave up a run on four hits.  Allison Cukrov went the distance for the Seawolves, giving up four earned runs on nine hits, and striking out five.

Suzie Karath worked a lead-off walk and advanced to third as Lauren Maloney doubled in the next place appearance.  A ground-out scored Karath and Maloney came around to score on a bunt single by Bernadette Tenuto.  Fairfield would get one of those runs back in its portion of the second-inning as Wigand doubled down the left field line to start the frame.  She advanced to third on a Kimi Kurata single and came home on an Osofsky single two batters later.

Stony Brook played three runs in the top of the fifth inning, with the big hit a two-run homer by Jess Combs, to take a 5-1 lead.  Fairfield promptly answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.  Consecutive singles by Osofsky and Brianna Levick opened the inning and following a pop-out, Sammy Ruffolo walked to load the bases.  An error by the Seawolves' shortshop allowed the first run to score and Wigand followed with a single down the left field line to make the score 5-3 as Levick scored and Ruffolo advanced to third.  Ruffolo would score on a sac fly by pinch-hitter Rae Ball in the following plate appearance.

Maloney homered with two out in the visitors half of the sixth for a 6-4 Stony Brook lead.  The Stags plated a run in their final at-bat when Kurata drove in Lauren Liseth with a single, but could not get the tying run home.
All the offense in the second game came with one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth.  Maloney singled to right with two out and then scored when Shayla Giosia homered to left center.

The Stags are back in action on Thursday as they host Connecticut at 3:30 p.m.
