Softball Sweeps Columbia, Army At Rebel Games

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Fairfield University softball team caught a sunny day this afternoon and made the most of the opportunity. After losing two games to rain on Sunday, the Stags took the field on Monday and posted a 4-1 win over Columbia University and a 7-0 victory against Army at the Rebel Games.

Lauren Liseth registered four hits in the two games, while Kristen Filicia added three hits on the day. Pitcher Rae Ball tossed a five-hit shutout against Army, and added a three-run homer in the first inning. With the two wins, Fairfield improved to 6-5 on the season.

In the Columbia game, Fairfield started the game with a pair of runs in the first inning, as Filicia started the frame by reaching second on a two-base error. Liseth sent Filicia to third base with a single, and then put runners on second and third with a stolen base. Alli Wigand drove home the first run with a fielder's choice bunt, while Ball recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Columbia scored its only run in the bottom of the first, a rally started with a lead-off double by Emily Snodgrass. The third baseman eventually scored on a bunt from Jennifer Bergeron to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Fairfield regained its two-run edge with a run in the fourthBrianna Levick drove home Sammy Ruffolo for a 3-1 edge. The Stags closed the scoring in the seventh inning when Filicia posted an infield hit, stole second, and came around following Liseth's second hit of the game.

Rebecca Trott went the distance for the Stags, striking out five hitters and allowing just two hits in seven innings of work.

Fairfield put together all the offense it would need in the first inning against Army, plating five runners in bottom of the first inning. Filicia led off witha  double, and took third and home following a pair of passed balls. Mikayla Shumate walked and went to second after Liseth singled. Wigand sent a ball to center field to score the team's second run. Ball finished off the inning with a three-run blast that pushed the score to 5-0 after one inning.

The Stags also added a single run in the second inning with back-to-back doubles from Shumate and Liseth. The final run cross home plate in the sixth inning when Macey Cloberdants walked and took advantage of two wild pitches for the team's seventh run of the game.

Ball picked up the win by scattering five hits and striking out two hitters.
