Softball Opens Season With Split At Seahawk Classi

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Rebecca Trott scattered five hits and tossed a complete game as the Stags softball team defeated North Carolina-Wlimington by a 6-3 score to earn a split in the opening day of the Seahawk Classic. Lauren Liseth drove home three runners in the game to pace the offense in the victory.

The Stags took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first when Liseth grounded out to shortstop which drove home Kristen Filicia. Fairfield tacked on five runs in the second inning with Liseth delivering the key hit - a two-run double with two outs. Filicia brought home a run after she was hit by a pitch and Mikayla Shumate plated a pair of runs with a single in the inning as well.

Trott kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard until the seventh inning when the put together three hits after securing just two hits in the first six innings. She struck out two batters in the inning before retiring the final hitter on a ground ball to shortstop. Fairfield finished the game with seven hits and three stolen bases.

In the opener, Fairfield scored two runs in its first at-bat against the University of Kansas as Filicia and Shumate opened the innings with singles. Filicia tallied the game's first run when she stole home as part of a double steal. Liseth was on the back end of that play and evetually came home on Alli Wigand's suicide squeeze.

Kansas used the long ball after afternoon, scoring its first run of the game off a solo homer from Mariah Montgomery launched a ball over the left field fence to cut the lead to 2-1. The Stags earned that run back in the top of the fourth when pitcher Rae Ball led off the innign with a home run to left center, making the score 4-1.

The Jayhawks took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of two-run homers to gain the lead for good at 5-3. Marissa Ingle and Maggie Hull were responsible for the two home runs that inning.

Ball went the first 3.2 innings before yielding to Emily Orr. Orr finished off the bame by tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks.

Fairfield returns to action on Saturday when it plays Gardner-Webb at 10 am in the last game of the round-robin competition. The Stags will play a semi-final game later that afternoon against an opponent to be determined.
