FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team plays its eighth and final road game of this month-long trip to start the season when the Stags play Austin Peay State University on December 1 at 8:30 pm EST. A win would even up the Stags record which would be quite impressive considering this eight-game stretch included an ACC team in Virginia and Big East foes Providence and DePaul.
The team has received great play from senior
Derek Needham and freshman
Amadou Sidibe over the last few games. Needham tallied 18 points against Providence and followed up with a season-high 29 points at DePaul, his best two-game scoring total since netting 32 against Niagara and 19 versus Siena last season. Sidibe comes off his first career double-double with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. The freshman is the only Fairfield student-athlete to shoot 50 percent or better in every game this year and brings a team-best .680 field goal percentage (17 of 25).
Following the Austin Peay game, the Stags will return home for their first home game of 2012-13 when they host Canisius College on December 7 at 7 pm. The Golden Griffs are one of the hottest teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, boasting a 4-1 overall record after their win over UMBC on November 29. The game will also represent the MAAC opener for both teams with Fairfield finishing up its conference weekend with a road game at Rider University on December 9.
Austin Peay brings a 3-3 record into tonight's game after defeating Berea College by a 108-53 count at home.Austin Peay scored 63 points in the second half after taking a 22-point lead at intermission. Five student-athletes reached double figures, led by Anthony Campbell and Corey Arentsen with 20 points each. Campbell reached his 1,000th career point in the game. Travis Betran leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game, followed by Campbell's 13.3 scoring average. Will Triggs is on the cusp of double digits by netting 9.8 points every forty minutes. Chris Freeman serves as the team's top rebounder with 8.2 caroms per contest. Betran represents Austin Peay's top three-point shooter with 15 made and a .455 percentage.
