FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team came away with an 8-0 victory against the Siena Saints this afternoon. It is the first time in program history that the team has scored eight goals in a game. Sophomore
Felicitas Heinen had her first hat trick while three Stags had their first collegiate goals, sophomore
Emily Leo, and freshmen
Kristian Stefanides and
Emily McCauley.

Sarah Wickles helped the Stags jump on the board in the fourth minute with a goal assisted by junior
Christy Starsinic. For the remainder of the half, possession went back and forth with good play on both sides. At the 31:43 mark, Heinen scored her first goal of the game from the top of the circle off a rebound. Fairfield headed into the half with a 2-0 lead against the Saints.
The Stags attacked throughout the entire second half, dominating play and adding six more goals over the course of 35 minutes. In the 38th minute, Leo deflected one into the net after a shot from five yards out by
Shealyn Testa giving Fairfield the 3-0 lead. Leo has been a leader in assists all season for the Stags and has now garnered her first collegiate goal.
Fairfield's next three goals all came within two minutes. Heinen put her second mark on the board with a successful penalty stroke, her fifth of the season. Freshman McCauley followed up with an unassisted goal past Siena goalkeeper Beth Meyers for her first collegiate goal at 56:15 and immediately assisted Stefanides for the Stags' sixth goal of the game. Stefanides came right back four minutes later and put one more in the net at 61:18.
Heinen capped off her hat trick with the last goal of the game in the 66th minute after a corner taken by
Nikki McLucas. McLucas passed it in to
Valerie Buurma who then set up the shot for Heinen. Heinen now leads the team with 30 points, breaking down to 13 goals and four assists. Fourteen different student-athletes on the Fairfield field hockey team have put up points this season, 11 of whom have scored at least one goal.
Freshman goalkeeper
Casey Heely earned her first collegiate win and shutout against the Saints posting four saves and now owns a goals against average of 1.93 and a save percentage of .750.
The Stags will travel to Orono, Maine for one more game this week to face conference opponent University of Maine (1-0) at 1p.m. In their conference opener, the Black Bears defeated Vermont, 3-1.
