Field Hockey Comes Up Short in Conference Opener

DURHAM, N.H.
– The Stags came up short in a 2-0 decision against No. 15 New Hampshire in their America East conference opener. 

Six minutes into the game, Wildcats' forward Casey Pohlmeyer put the ball in the back of the net off a penalty corner by Hayley Rausch and an assist from Kendall Deck.   After the opening goal, the Stags defense held strong especially goalkeeper Maddy Sposito who made four saves on fourteen shots.  The Stags managed four shots in the opening half with Marit Westenberg taking two of Fairfield's shots.  The score heldat 1-0  for the remainder of the half.

The Stags entered the second period looking to attack as Westenberg had the first shot of the half two minutes into the half.   New Hampshire goalkeeper Katherine Nagengast made the save, her only one of the day.  Possession went back and forth throughout the half as Fairfield battled to tie the game.  With two minutes left, the Stags left the goal open as freshman forward Emily Leo substituted in for Sposito.  Seconds later at the 68:03 mark, Mary Quill had her second goal of the season for the Wildcats converting a pass from Hayley Rausch who tallied her second assist on the day. 

Fairfield, now 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the America East, will return to Alumni Field for their Play for the Cure event on Sunday, October 2 as they host Lock Haven University in a nonconference game at 1 p.m.  As part of the Play for the Cure day, four Fairfield County youth programs will play at 10am and 11am.
