HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. –
The Fairfield University volleyball team wrapped at its stint at the Hofstra Invitational with a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 26-24) victory over St. Francis (NY) this evening. Seven Stags were in double figures helping Fairfield notch its second straight victory.

Junior Brianna Dixion led the Stags with 15 kills. She also had two blocks and four digs.

Rookie Lindsay Weaver tallied 12 kills while freshman Caitlin Stapleton and senior Kendal Dirkin added 11 kills apiece. The three Stags also played well defensively as Weaver tallied five total blocks, Stapleton finished with four blocks, and Dirkin had three total blocks.

Freshman Carsen Mata tallied a career-best 19 digs while rookie Camille Coffey finished with 17 digs for the second straight match. Coffey was named to the Hofstra Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.43 digs per set and 2.79 kills per set. Coffey also had six total blocks in all four matches of the tournament.

Sophomore Rachel Romansky was just shy of a double-double finishing with 48 assists and eight digs to go along with four kills.

The Stags (2-5) set the tone early cruising to the 25-15 victory in the opening frame. In the second set, the Terriers took advantage of several Stags errors and mounted a 7-2 run to move out to 14-8 lead. Fairfield made a furious comeback late in the stanza as Weaver pulled the Stags within 22-21 with a kill. But St. Francis was able to hold Fairfield off for the 25-22 win.

Fairfield asserted its dominance once again in the third set. Leading 12-10, a kill from Romansky sparked a 9-0 run for the Stags. Fairfield never looked back going on to a 25-15 win.

In the fourth set, St. Francis rallied from three points down to take a 19-16 lead after a series of Fairfield miscues. The Stags did not back down, tying the score at 21 before Weaver put home a feed from Romansky to give Fairfield the lead. With the scored knotted at 24-24, an attack error by the Terriers gave the Stags the lead. Senior Haililani Pokipala put the match away with a service ace.

Fairfield returns to action next weekend when it travels to the Holly Young Invitational hosted by the University of New Hampshire. The Stags start the tournament on September 9 against UConn. Fairfield will face UNH and Indiana State on September 10.
