FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team shut out the Sacred Heart Pioneers in a 2-0 victory on University Field this afternoon, improving their record to 6-2. The victory extended the Stags' winning streak to four games, the longest since the 2000 season.
The Stags wasted no time when they stepped on the field, as
Christy Starsinic scored unassisted, less than a minute into the game. After a midfield steal, Starsinic carried the ball up field on a breakaway and shot it past the Sacred Heart University goalkeeper,
Kim Stow. Fairfield maintained possession for the majority of the first half, outshooting the Pioneers 7-2. Later in the half around the 27 minute mark,
Hillary Fitts had a long pass to forward Starsinic who took it toward the net for her second unassisted goal of the game, putting the Stags up 2-0 going into the half.
Fairfield was unable to get one into the net for the second half, but goalkeeper
Maddy Sposito and her defense were able to hold the Pioneers to just one shot on goal over the final 35 minutes. At the buzzer, the Stags came away with their third shutout of the season.
The Fairfield University field hockey team returns to action on Friday when it battles The College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. at 4 p.m. The Crusaders are 1-6 having recently lost to fellow America East opponent University of New Hampshire by a 5-0 score.
