BROOKLINE, Mass. --
Jordan Ayris scored his second goal of the season but it was not enough for the men's soccer team to overcome a two-goal deficit in a 2-1 setback against Northeastern University. Ayris has scored both of Fairfield's goals this season.
The first half was played evenly as both teams managed five shots in the opening 45 minutes. Both goalkeepers were forced to make just one save in the first half. Fairfield goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe registered his save off a shot by Laurence Braude in the 15th minute. Northeastern goalkeeper turned away a shot by
Jon Clements with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Following halftime, both offenses began to apply more pressure. Just five minutes into the half, Ricardo McDonald ended the scoreless tie with his second goal of the season. Clements had another opportunity to score but a save by Oliver Blum, who started the second half for the Huskies, kept the home team in front, 1-0.
Northeastern doubled its advantage with Josh Semerene converted a pass from Dante Marini in the 80th minute, a goal which seemed to seal the win. However, Fairfield did not relent and continued to push forward. Finally, Ayris took a pass from
Daniel Shaw and pushed a shot past Blum which pulled the Stags within a goal at 2-1.
Fairfield nearly tied the game in the final minute when
Jack Burridge, who entered the game just five minutes earlier, sent a shot that appeared to tie the game. Blum put his foot on the shot and deflected it away from danger to keep Northeastern in front.
Northeastern improved to 4-1-1 overall while the Stags fell to 0-3-0 on the season.
