The Fairfield University women's soccer team opened its 2011 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 loss at #4 Boston College on Sunday afternoon. The Stags are now 0-1 on the year, while the Eagles improve to 1-0-1 on the season.
Alicia Blose tallied the game's only goal at the 29:06 mark, putting home a pass from Rachel Davitt from just inside the box. The Stags back line was solid all afternoon as they faced 16 shots from Boston College.  Senior keeper Kelly Boudreau stopped five of those shots.
The Stags acquitted themselves well against the 2010 Women's Soccer Cup semifinalists, with 21 players seeing action in the contest. Seventh-year head coach Jim O'Brien started two members of his rookie class, with all 10 freshmen field players stepping on the pitch for at least 18 minutes of action.
Boston College had a 16-4 edge in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corner kick chances. Fairfield committed one fewer foul, 10-9, on the afternoon.
The one goal margin is the closest game in the nine game series between Fairfield and Boston College.
The Stags return to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Hofstra for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
