FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Sarah Minice tossed a five-inning perfect game as the Fairfield University softball remained in first place with a sweep of Saint Peter's College. The Stags improved to 9-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 25-17 overall.
Minice retired all 15 batter she faced, including eight strikeouts as the team posted an 8-0 victory. She lowered her ERA to 1.37 which leads the MAAC and earned her fourth shutout of the season. The seniro has pitched 17-plus straight scoreless innings after today's effort.
The Stags took control of the game early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Kristin Felicia was hit by a pitch, stole second and took third base when the throw escaped the shortstop. She came home off Mikayla Schumate's sacrifice fly to center field.
Rae Ball added an RBI single in the inning as well.
The lead went to 5-0 with two more runs in the third inning as
Alli Wigand and Ball each added a sacrifice fly. Fairfield rallied for three more runs in the fourth inning as the team took advantage of two Saint Peter's errors. Shumate had the only RBI in the inning when she reached on an infield hit to the right side of the infield.
In the second game, Fairfield scored three runs in both the first and second innings to take command, 6-0. In the first inning, Filicia singled through the right side and Shumate reached on an error to put runners and first and third. Filicia came home on the front end of a double steal with Shumate for a 1-0 lead. Liseth singled to bring home the second run, followed by Lingo's RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
The second inning included a two-run triple by Liseth over the center fielder's head. The freshman came home on Lingo's single through the right side for a 6-0 lead. The game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning after Wigand drove a two-out, two-run single to right center to raise the score to 8-0.
Rebecca Trott earned the win by scattering three hits and walking one, which improved her overall record to 3-4.
Fairfield finished the weekend by hosting Manhattan College on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader. The first pitch will be tossed at 1 pm.
