SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Fairfield University softball team finished up their four-game trip to California with a 6-2 loss to Cal Poly in the Mustang Classic. The Stags posted a 1-3 record during their stay in California.
Cal Poly opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, when Nora Sobczak led off the game with a single which was followed by Kim Westlund's triple into left-center field. Westlund then scored on a Fairfield error to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.
The Mustangs came back with another pair of runs in the second inning, courtesy of three consecutive hits that made the score 4-0. Sobczak and Westlund each had a hit during that two-run rally.
Fairfield put its first run on the board when it loaded the bases in the last half of the third.
Rebecca Trott sent home the Stags' first run with a base hit that made the score 4-1. The score moved to 4-2 in the sixth inning when
Tiffany Lawson chased home a run with a triple.
Cal Poly closed the scoring with two more runs in its half of the seventh inning as a wild pitch and a single were responsible for the final two runs.
Rae Ball and Trott combined for seven innings in the pitching circle. Ball went the first three inning and fanned two hitters after scattering nine hits. Trott closed out the game with four innings of work while allowing two hits and striking out a pair of Mustangs.
