Softball Uses Long Ball To Post Win Over Stony Bro

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Fairfield University softball team used the long ball to score all four of its runs as it opened the Wolfpack Challenge with a 4-1 win over the University at Stony Brook. The Stags hit three home runs in the game, including two from freshman Kimi Kurata (Torrance, Calif.).

The Stags opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with their first homer of the game. With one out, Alli Wigand (Oceanside, N.Y.) launched her first home run of the season over the left-center field fence for a 1-0 Fairfield lead.

Stony Brook tied the score in the top of the third inning Alyssa Hawley singled up the middle, stole second and advanced to third base on a groud out. She came home after Bernadette Tenuto hit a double down the left field line for a 1-1 score.

Kurata took over the game offensively at that point, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Macy Cutshaw led off with a single over the second base bag. Rachel Beaudoin was sent in as a pinch runner, and promptly scored as Kurata drove the ball over the left field for a two-run homer and a 4-1 lead.

Freshman Rae Ball made those runs stand as she completed the game and earned the win. Ball scattered six hits, walked one, and struck out one hitter.

Fairfield continues play in the Wolfpack Challenge this afternoon when it plays host North Carolina State University at 4:30 pm. Check back for the result and story this evening.
