Stags Fall 76-49 At N.C. State

The Fairfield University women's basketball team saw its four-game win streak snapped by North Carolina State University 76-49 Tuesday evening at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.  The loss drops the Stags to 14-7 on the year, while the Wolfpack improve to 10-12.

The Stags knocked down their first three shots of the game, two from Katelyn Linney (Freehold, N.J.) behind the arc, to jump out to an 8-1 lead. The first-half saw eight lead changes and two ties in the first 12:33 of play, the last coming at 20-20 on a Linney three-pointer. The Stags final lead of the game was at the 11:00 mark when Joelle Nawrocki (Unionville, Conn.) scored for a 17-16 advantage. The Wolfpack scored the next four points to take a 20-17 edge, but the Stags came charging back to tie the score 20-20. N.C. State answered with six consecutive points to take a 26-20 lead with just over five minutes to play in the half. Brittany MacFarlane (Hamilton, Ontario) knocked down a three-pointer on the Stags next possession, which Desiree Pina (Plainville, Conn.) followed with a basket with 4:01 to play to get Fairfield back within a point, 26-25. The Wolfpack scored the next five points to jumpstart a 14-2 half ending run, that sent the Stags to the locker room down 40-27.
N.C. State opened its largest lead, 44-29, to that point just under two minutes into the second half on a three-pointer by Myisha Goodwin-Coleman (Lorton, Va.). Fairfield put together a 9-2 run at that point, closing back within single-digits, 46-38 on Linney's fourth three-pointer of the night with just over 14:00 to play in the contest. The Stags would get no closer as the Wolfpack struck for four points in a 24-second span to push the lead back to 12, 50-38, and finished the game on a 30-11 run.

Taryn Johnson (Brockton, Mass.) led the Stags with 14 points, shooting 6-10 from the field and 2-2 at the line. She also corralled a team-best eight boards to go along with three blocked shots. Pina had seven points and seven boards, but also handed out a career-high equaling six assists, against one turnover, in 30 minutes of action. Linney hit 4-9 from behind the arc to finish with 12 points.

N.C. State was led by the 20-point, nine-rebound effort of Bonae Holton, who scored her 1,000 career point in the game. Goodwin-Coleman added 17 points, on 7-8 shooting, while Marissa Kastanek finished with 12 points.

The Stags shot 36 percent for the game and hit 6-17 from behind the arc, with 5-9 from downtown in the first-half. Fairfield was outrebounded for the first time in 13 games, 38-31. Fairfield turned the ball over 22 times in the game, which helped the Wolfpack to a 28-11 edge in points off of turnover.

The Stags return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Friday night when they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. to take on Iona College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Hynes Athletic Center.
