FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's basketball team opened their 2011-12 season with a 42-34 victory over visiting Stony Brook University this evening in Alumni Hall. Senior
Taryn Johnson posted 12 points and seven rebounds to lead the Stags.
Senior
Desiree Pina finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Pina moved one step closer to reaching her 1,000th career point now needing just 11 points to achieve the milestone.
Fairfield (1-0) took a 20-16 lead into halftime but Stony Brook (0-1) erased the deficit early in the second half. The Seawolves scored six unanswered points in the first three minutes of the frame to pull ahead 22-20. After Stony Brook's Destiny Jacobs hit a three-pointer to make the score 25-22, the Stags offense kicked into gear as Fairfield went on a 17-4 run over the next 10 minutes.
Freshman
Felicia DaCruz gave the Stags their biggest lead of the night, 39-29, sinking a 3-pointer with 3:15 left in the contest. Stony Brook would cut the gap to five points but Pina went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe during the final 19 seconds to put the game out of reach.
DaCruz finished with five points, three boards, and two assists in her collegiate debut. Junior
Katelyn Linney added eight points and two rebounds while sophomore
Katie Cizynski and junior
Brittany MacFarlane each added four points. Cizynski finished with a career-high eight rebounds while MacFarlane had four rebounds and tied a career-best with two blocks.
Davis had a team-high 12 points and nine rebounds for Stony Brook.
The Stags have now won five-straight season openers under Head Coach

Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, November 13 when the Stags host the University of the Pacific at 1pm in Alumni Hall.
