FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- For the second straight game, the Fairfield men's soccer team scored late in regulation to tie the game and set up an overtime victory. This time, the Stags knotted the score at 1-1 with just over two minutes remaining before winning the game with 1:25 left in the second overtime for a 2-1 victory against Canisius College. The decision extended the team's winning streak to four games and kept it unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play at 3-0.
Last Sunday,
Jack Burridge provided part of the heroics by scoring a goal with 52 seconds left in regulation to send the Rider game into overtime. Tonight, the graduate student was part of a dynamic scoring play which made the score 1-1 with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Just 90 seconds after Cansiuis took the lead, goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe punted the ball deep into Canisius defensive third. Burridge controlled the ball and flicked it to the right side of the box.
Jon Clements timed his run perfectly, securing Burridge's pass and bending a shot around the charging goalkeeper to tie the game at 87:45.
In the first overtime, Canisius had the best chance to win the game when Jared Ott sent a cross to the middle of the box. Asani Samuels slid into the cross and redirected toward goal, but the ball sailed just over the cross bar to keep the game going.
The second overtime did not offer too many scoring chances as both teams controlled the play in the middle of the field. It wasn't until the 108th minute that the game broke with the Stags taking advantage of its scoring opportunity. Burridge picked up the ball just past the midfield and carried it into the offensive third. He pushed a ball past two Canisius defenders toward
Jordan Ayris, who cut from the right side of the box. He received the pass and dribbled one-on-one against goalkeeper Ryan Arvin. Ayris drilled a shot to the lower right corner that ended the contest at 108:35.
"Tying the game late and winning in overtime certainly shows that this team does not give up," Head
Carl Rees said. "I think it shows the character of the lads. This gives us a great start in MAAC play, but we have to put it behind us and get ready for Niagara on Sunday."
The Stags host the Purple Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Lessing Field. The game is slated for 1 pm.
