FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team puts its 10-game winning streak on the line when it hosts Saint Peter's College at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
Fairfield and Saint Peter's are the top two defensive teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and both are ranked in the top 15 nationally for scoring defense. The Stags are the only unbeaten team remaining in the MAAC at 4-0. Saint Peter's entered the weekend undefeated in the MAAC but lost Friday night at Iona.
Fans can take advantage of several game-day promotions on Sunday, including
Youth Basketball Day,
Bridgeport's Brighest, and
Norwalk Community Appreciation Day. All youth basketball players and/or teams wearing their team jersey will receive FREE admission. All city of Norwalk residents will receive two tickets for the price of one. Tickets are in the end court section, and fans must show any proof of residence. Fairfield athletics and the Bridgeport Public School System will recognized students who excelled in the CAPT and CMT testing.
Fairfield (11-3 overall, 4-0 MAAC) is in the midst of a 10-game winning streak, suprassing the 1961-62 team's run nf ine straight which helped the squad finish the year with a 20.5 mark. The Stags will try and take another step closer to tying Fairfield's longest Division I win streak of 13 games set during the 1965-66 campaign under George Bisacca. The 1965-66 team owned a 19-5 overall record.
The Stags (8-7 overall, 3-1 MAAC) moved up to number five in the nation for scoring defense at 55.5 points in the last set of NCAA statistics (games through January 6). Fairfield saw that scoring defense average fall further after allowing just 44 points against Marist, entering tonight's game with a 54.7 points per game average. Stephen F. Austin (51.3 ppg), Nebraska (52.9 ppg), Cincinnati (53.8), and Wisconsin (55.2 ppg) were listed ahead of the Stags in the January 6 rankings. Saint PEter's entered the weekend ranked 12th by allowing 58.1 points per game. Fairfield and Saint Peter's are ranked number one and two respectively in the MAAC for scoring defense.
The Peacocks have been playing without their leading scorer Wesley Jenkins for the last three games. The senior is averaging a team-hgih 11.5 points this season. Classmate Nick Leon became the latest 1,200-point scorer for the Peacocks, one of only 19 Saint Peter's student-athletes to reach that mark.Fellow senior Ryan Bacon became the eighth Peacock to reach 600 carer rebounds, and is on pace to reach 800 for his career.
