Weather Halts Game In 70th Minute As Men's Soccer

Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team finished up its seven-game home stand in an unusual way as the Stags played St. Francis College to a 1-1 draw. The game was called at 70:08 after lightning and rain stopped the game and eventually forced the officials to end the game.

St. Francis controlled play through most of the first half, outshooting the Stags by a 7-1 count in the opening 45 minutes. However, Fairfield made its one shot count as the team was awarded a penalty kick at 28:25. David Piedrahita pushed the ball into the upper corner past goalkeeper Curtis Julien, giving the home team a 1-0 advantage.

The Stags advanced the ball into St. Francis' end more in the second half, and had two opportunities to tack on a goal. Freshman Jon Clements had both chances, the first of which came when he poked the ball loose and carried the ball into the box. He sent a shot to the lower let corner, but the ball went just wide of the far post.

He also created one more opportunity when he took advantage of a misplayed ball by a St. Francis defender. Clements advanced the ball to within 10 yards of the goal, and hit a hard shot to the far corner. Benkert just put his fingertips onto the ball, deflecting just wide. Kwadwo Asante was closest to the rebound, but the ball just went over the touchline before he could redirect the ball.

The Terriers tied the game after Fairfield was whistled for a foul just outside the box on the right side. Jonas Pantelidis put the ball into  play and sent a cross to the center of the box. John Sallhag deflected the kick past Fairfield goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe, tying the game.

Just a few seconds later, game officials stopped the game when lightning and rain moved into the area. The game was never restarted but since it went past 70 minutes, the game was official.

O'Keeffe made six saves for the Stags, while Julien and Benkert each made a save for St. Francis.
