HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Fairfield University volleyball team finished the Colgate Classic with a 3-1 (19-25, 13-25, 25-20, 18-25) loss to the host Raiders this afternoon. For the third straight match, sophomore Brianna Dixion (Long Beach, Calif.) finished with double-digit kills.
Dixion tallied 10 kills along with three digs. Junior Haililani Pokipala (Honolulu, Hawaii) just missed a double-double, finishing with 11 digs and nine kills. Freshman Hayley Moyer (Riverside, Calif.) had a solid match, recording nine kills, four aces and four total blocks.
Colgate (2-0) took an early eight-point lead in the first set and Fairfield (0-3) was unable to recover, falling 25-19. The Raiders opened another early lead in the second set and hit .611 to roll to the 25-13 victory.
The Stags regrouped in the third set. Fairfield trailed early but bounced back, tying the score 13-13 on a kill by Pokipala. The Stags then went on a 7-1 run, capped off by a Moyer kill, to pull ahead 21-14. Fairfield went to post the 25-20 win.
The fourth set was a full of runs by both squads. The Raiders used 7-2 run midway through the stanza to open up a 13-7 lead. Colgate then pushed out to a 20-9 margin before the Stags used a run of their own to pull within 21-16 on back-to-back aces by Moyer. The Raiders managed to hang on for the 25-18 victory.
Fairfield returns to action next weekend at the Northern Colorado Classic. The Stags will face South Dakota and Georgia on September 3 followed by Northern Colorado and UMKC on September 4.
