Mann, Johnson Win Fairfield University Athlete Of

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior volleyball middle blocker Katie Mann earned the Female Athlete of the Year, while senior men's basketball center Anthony Johnson collected the Male Athlete of the Year award at the annual athletics awards banquet.

Mann set the career record holder for block assists with 349 and attack percentage with a .361 mark in 2009. She earned All-MAAC first team honors, and All-MAAC tournament team accolades as a senior. She earned the MAAC player of the week honors five tim es during the season.

Johnson ranked in the top in the nation with 17 double-doubles, after averaging nearly a double-double for the season with 16.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He received the MAAC defensive player of the year and earned a spot on the All-MAAC first team as well as a berth tot he All-Met second team in 2009-10.

Meghan Sullivan gained the Female Freshman of the Year award after she posted a 20-7 record in singles and a 17-6 mark in doubles, helping the women's tennis team capture its second straight MAAC tournament title. She won 15 of 17 matches during the portion of the schedule, and brings an eight-match win streak into the NCAA tournament next weekend. She also was an All-MAAC student-athlete at number four singles and number three doubles.

Basketball guard Derek Needham garnered the Male Freshman of the Year after setting the school record for most points and most assists by a freshman. He won the MAAC Rookie of the Week 10 times, breaking the conference record which was held by NBA great Lionel Simmons who won the award nine times. He earned All-MAAC, MAAC All-Rookie, and All-Met honors during the 2009-10 campaign.

Carly McCullough, a senior on the field hockey team, won the Alumni Association Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's Academic All-America team as well as a the America East All-Academic Team. She finished her senior season with five goals and one assist.

The Men's Scholar-Athlete award went to Sean Bannon, a long-stick midfielder for the men's lacrosse team. He earned All-ECAC academic honors. He played in 13 games and scored two goals with one assist and a game-winning goal. He is a Rhodes Scholar candidate.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Boudreau was voted the William Wallin award winner. She started 20 of 21 games and posted a 1.33 goals against average. Boudreau was instrumental in the women's soccer team's community service activities, which made her the coaches' choice for the Wallin award.

Two former student-athletes were inducted into the Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame during the evening. Volleyball hitter Joanne Saunders and men's lacrosse goalkeeper Sam Peterson comprised the 2009-10 induction class.

The awards banquet took place at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn.
