Game Notes
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will resume its non-conference slate with a road game against the University of Florida on December 28.
Fairfield is in the midst of a seven-game winning streak which improved the team's overall record to 8-3 after a 67-59 win over Vermont on December 20. The Stags tied the longest win streak under Head Coach Ed Cooley with the victory, putting together a seven-game streak in each of his first three years at the helm. Last year, the team's longest win streak stood at four games.
The Stags are coming off another long layoff tonight, last playing eight days ago. Fairfield has played just one game since December 12. Derek Needham remains the team's top scorer, checking into today's action with a 12.3 scoring average. He has scored in double figures in all but two games this season. Warren Edney is next in line with a 10.6 scoring average. Olander tops the team rebounding list with 7.5 caroms per contest. He's been the top rebounder in five of the team's 11 games this season, including a personal-best 14 caroms against Loyola on December 5.
Florida improved to 9-3 overall following its win over Radford on December 22. The Gators remain in the national polls (#20 AP; #19 Coaches Poll), thanks to a strong RPI and strength of schedule. The team was ranked third in the RPI and was number one in strength of schedule (as of December 20).
Head Coach Billy Donovan is one win shy of moving into third place in SEC history among wins as an SEC head coach. He posted his 340th win with the decision over Radford, and owns a .705 winning percentage (340-142 overall). Erving Walker leads the team in scoring with a 13.5 scoring average, one of three Florida student-athletes in double figures this year. Kenny Boynton (12.3 ppg) and Vermon Macklin (10.5 ppg) are also scoring better than 10 points per outing. Macklin is also the team's top rebounder with 6.3 rebounders every forty minutes.
