FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Hitter
Alex Lopez (Fort Collins, Colo.) posted a double-double on Senior Day to help lift the Fairfield University volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-19) victory over Loyola University Maryland this afternoon in Alumni Hall.
Lopez, who was honored with fellow seniors
Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and
Hannah Segebart (Littleton, Colo.) prior to the match, finished with 12 kills and 12 digs for her first double-double of the season. Hughes, meanwhile, finished with eight kills and a block while Segebart had six digs and an ace.
Freshman
Rachel Romansky (Denver, Colo.) collected 30 assists with four kills and six digs while classmate
Hayley Moyer (Riverside, Calif.) had six kills. Junior
Bethany Steiger (Cary, Ill.) and sophomore
Brianna Dixion (Long Beach, Calif.) each recorded five kills, a dig, a block, and an assist.
The Stags dominated the entire match behind .319 hitting. Fairfield posted 41 kills while Loyola (13-17; 7-9 MAAC) had 23 kills and hit .022 on the day. There was only one tie and one lead change during the match, occurring with the first two services of the first set.
Fairfield took an early 12-7 lead in the first stanza. Loyola cut the gap to three points on a kill by Nina Camaioni but the Stags responded with a 6-2 run to pull ahead 19-12. Fairfield extended its lead to 23-14 and rolled to the 25-18 win.
Lopez served the first three points of the second set for another early Stags lead. Junior
Haililani Pokipala (Honolulu, Hawaii) later served six-straight points to give Fairfield the 13-3 advantage. Fairfield cruised to the 25-14 win.
The third set had a similar start with Fairfield opening up a 10-3 lead. The Stags used their cushion to fight the Greyhounds off the rest of the way to come away with the 25-19 win. Hughes delivered the match-winning kill in her final match at Alumni Hall.
Fairfield (11-17; 10-6 MAAC) wraps up the regular season November 13-14 at Marist and Saint Peter's, respectively. The Stags and the other nine conference teams will head to the 2010 MAAC Championship, November 18-20, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
