FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team hits the road for its final game of the Philly Hoop Group Classic, battling Norfolk State University at the Palestra on Friday night. The game will be the first game of a doubleheader and will tip off at 5:15 pm. Rutgers and Saint Joseph's will play the nightcap with a 7:30 pm start.
Fairfield enters tonight's game with a 1-3 record after dropping a 60-51 decision to Saint Joseph's on Tuesday night. The Stags led through most of the first half but the two teams traded the lead back and forth throughout the second half. The Hawks used a 9-0 run late in the second half to secure the win.
Derek Needham remains the team's top scorer with an 11.0 scoring average, joining
Warren Edney as the team's double-digit scorers. Edney, who tallied a team-high 16 points against Saint Joseph's, averages 10 points per game. Ryan Olander is the team's top rebounder with eight rebounds per game after securing 11 rebounds versus the Hawks.
Norfolk State brings a 1-3 overall record into tonight's game, dropping a pair of games in the Philly Hoop Group Classic against Penn State and Rutgers. The Spartans won their only home game this season, defeating Jacksonville State. The team has not won a game away from Echols Hall in Norfolk.
Rob Hampton leads the Spartans offense with a 19.5 scoring average, one of two student-athletes with a double-digit scoring average. Kyle O'Quinn is next in line with a double-double average, neting 12.3 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per outing. Rodney McCauley, Hampton, and O'Quinn have started all four games this season. McCauley is averaging 5.8 points per game.
