FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team hosts Saint Joseph's University in the 2010-11 home opener at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, November 23. The game is schedule for a 7:30 pm tip off.
Fairfield enters the game with a 1-2 record after dropping a 64-49 decision to Penn State on Friday night. The Stags opened the season against three teams away from their home floor, playing Sacred Heart at the Mohegan Sun Arena, Rutgers at the Brown Athletic Center, and Penn State at the Jordan Center. The Stags look to even up their record against Saint Joseph's, a team which also comes into the game with a 1-2 mark.
The game is part of the Philly Hoop Group Classic, which started with Fairfield taking on Rutgers and Saint Joseph's battling Norfolk State earlier last week. After tonight's game, the teams will conclude the three-game event at the Palestra where Fairfield takes on Norfolk State at 5:15 pm and Rutgers plays Saint Joseph's at 7:30 pm.
Derek Needham remains the team's top scorer despite scoring six points in the Penn State game. It marked only the second time in his career that he did not score in double digits. He brings an 11.0 scoring average into this contest, while
Warren Edney places second with eight points every forty minutes. Ryan Olander is the team's top rebounder at seven rebounds per outing.
Saint Joseph's comes off a win over Norfolk State in its last outing, a 70-65 decision on November 20. Daryus Quarles led the Hawks offense with 17 points, while Carl Jones netted 16 points. Jones was very effective at the free throw line, making 11 of 12 attempts.
Carl Jones is one of three Saint Joseph's student-athletes averaging in double figures with 14.3 points per game. He joins Idris Hilliard (11.0 ppg) and Langston Galloway (10.7 ppg) for that distinction. Galloway is the team's top rebounder with 7.3 caroms per contest, and is also the team leader with four steals.
The starting lineup in the opening game was the youngest under Phil Martelli. Freshmen C.J. Aiken, Langston Galloway and Daryus Quarles were starters against Western Kentucky, along with Carl Jones and Idris Hilliard. The quintet also started against Norfolk State.
