FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team closed out the 2010 regular season with a 2-1 win over the University of Vermont in an America East game. The Stags posted their ninth win of the season, the best win total since the 2001 campaign.
The two teams played a closely-contested first half with the Stags holding a slight 6-4 edge in shots by the time the first half expired. The second half saw Fairfield put together a quick start that resulted in the game's first goal just two minutes into the half.
Marit Westenberg took a shot from the left ciricle which was deflected away. The loose ball was picked up by
Amanda Sullivan, who backhanded the ball into the goal at 37:52.
Fairfield secured a two-goal lead when
Christy Starsinic accepted a pass from
Jill Keeney inside the circle. Keeney started the play with a pass from the center of the circle that Starsinic secured about three yards from goal. She one-timed a shot past Vermont goalkeeper Brooke Crane at 57:22 for a 2-0 advantage.
Vermont broke the shutout when Emily Bastiaanse carried the ball into the circle and released a shot from just inside the arc that beat goalkeeper Maddy Spostio, who came off her line to cut down the angle.
Sposito ended the game with five saves in the Fairfield net, while Crane also tallied five saves for the Catamounts. Stephane Zygmunt relieved Crane in the second half but did not have to make a save in her 12-plus minutes of work.
