Field Hockey Comes Up Short In 2-1 Decision Agains

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey created several scoring opportunities down the stretch, but the Yale University defense was able to hang on for a 2-1 win at University Field on Sunday afternoon.

With just a couple minutes remaining, the Stags nearly tied the game when Marit Westenberg took a shot from the right side of the circle that beat the goalkeeper, but was cleared off the line as it rolled dangerously close to the goal line. Fairfield served a flurry of shots in the closing minutes but could not find a way to push the ball into the back of the net. Yale goalkeeper Katie Bolling made three saves in the game, all of which came down the stretch.

Yale enjoyed an 8-1 advantage in shots during the first half, including the first six of the game. Mary Beth Barham finally broke through for the Bulldogs when she converted a pass from Dinah Landshut at the 24:00 mark. Barham secured the pass and carried into the center of the circle before releasing the shot from three yards away.

The Stags made the most of their only shot of the first half as Westenberg released  a shot from six yards away that caught the far corner of the goal tying the game. The goal was set up with a pin-point pass from Amanda Sullivan, who threaded the ball through two defenders as she brought the ball down the far sideline.

Just a minute later, the Bulldogs regained the lead when Johna Paolino took a shot from the center of the circle, beating Maddy Sposito to the far corner for the game's final goal. Sposito made seven saves for the Stags.
