ORONO, M.E. – The Fairfield field hockey team fell behind by four goals at halftime as the University of Maine posted a 6-2 win in an America East game. 

Maine came out firing from the start connecting twice in the first ten minutes of play. Jocelyn Mitchell started the scoring off a pass from Kelly Newton at the 8:30 mark. Less than a minute later the Black Bears capitalized on a Fairfield turnover as Kelly Newton pushed one past goalkeeper Maddy Sposito.
Maine kept up their offensive pressure as Stephanie Gardner finished a Maire Dineen penalty corner at the 17:28 mark. Jocelyn Mitchell scored her second goal of the day off another Newton assist to put the Black Bears up four at the half.
Stag freshman Jill Keeney put the Stags on the board with her first career goal to start the second half. Keeney completed a pass from Anne Nieuwenhuis at 28:13. Maine answered right back with two more goals themselves. Kelly Newton finished her strong day after converting a pass from Brittany Cummings to go ahead 5-1. Cassandra Mendonca had the last tally for Maine off a rebound at the 60:23 mark. Three minutes later, Marit Westenberg scored her 10th goal of the season as she blasted a penalty corner over Maine goalie Brittany Flack.
The Maine Black Bears held a 20-11 advantage on shots and an 8-4 lead over the Stags on penalty corners. Sophomore Maddy Sposito played all 70:00 minutes in goal for Fairfield making nine saves on the day. The loss brings the Stags to 8-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Fairfield field hockey team returns home to University Field as they continue America East play against New Hampshire on October 22. The matchup is set for 4 pm.
