FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- With a trip to Buffalo behind them, the Fairfield men's soccer team will return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend by hosting Siena College on Friday night and Marist College on Sunday afternoon. Both games will be played at Lessing Field.
The Stags come off a 1-0 win over Niagara University in their last outing, as
Kwadwo Asante netted his first goal of the season to even up the team's conference slate. Fairfield fell to Canisius two days earlier by a 1-0 margin, as goalkeeper
Michael O'Keeffe made six saves against the Griffs.
O'Keeffe remains the top goalkeeper in the MAAC with a 0.93 goals against average and a .818 save percentage. The sophomore picked up his third shutout of the season in the win over the Purple Eagles last weekend.
Erik Ilisije and
David Piedrahita are the team's top two scorers with two goals for four points. Ilisije has one game-winner to his credit, netting the deciding goal in an overtime decision over Yale University. Piedrahita has tallied both of his goals off penalty kicks, the last of which was in a 1-1 tie with Saint Francis.
Fairfield remains unbeaten in games in which it scores a goal, posting a 2-0-3 mark to date. In all of the team's losses this season, the Stags were shutout by the opposition. The Stags have two ties when they were scoreless, battling nationally-ranked Boston College and the University of Massachusetts.
Siena College brings a 4-5-1 overall record into Friday night's game, which includes a 1-0 MAAC mark. The Saints opened the season with a 5-1 win over Syracuse University, but dropped the next four games. Since that streak, Siena owns a 3-1-1 record over the last five outings, the last of which was a 5-1 win against Marist at home. It was the fifth time that the Saints have tallied five goals in a game, hitting the mark against Syracuse, Central Connecticut (5-3 win), and Marist.
Steve Covino (four goals, two assists), Emery Welshman (four goals, two assists),and Joey Tavernese (three goals, four assists) are the team's leading scorers, each tallying 10 points in 10 games. Phil Chabot has started nine games in the Siena goal this year, posting a 1.68 goals against average with a .660 save percentage.
Marist looks to improve on its 5-5 overall record and its 0-1 MAAC mark on Sunday afternoon, coming off its loss to Siena College last week. The Red Foxes had won three straight games before dropping decisions to Fordham and Siena in their last two contests.
Stephen Brossard and Krystian Witkowski are the team's top scorers wtih 10 points each. Both student-athletes have four goals and two assists with one game-winning goal to their credit. Lucas Szabo is next in line with nine points, registering three goals and three assists. He is the team leader with two game-winning goals this year.
Goalkeeper Joe Pilla has started every game for the Red Foxes, posting a 2.22 goals against average with a .656 save percentage. He also has two shutouts this year.
