NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- Kwadwo Asante tallied his first goal of the year, which proved to be the difference as the men's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Niagara University in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game.
The two teams played a relatively even first half as both Fairfield and Niagara recorded six shots in the opening 45 minutes. Both goalkeepers were only forced to make one save in the first half, sending the two teams into halftime with no score.
The Purple Eagles pushed the ball forward for most of the half which resulted in the home team picking up 16 shots in the final half, while the Stags managed three chances. However, Asante finished one of those three scoring opportunities in the 70th minute, tipping the ball past goalkeeper Michael Moran to put the Stags in front for good at 1-0. Dan Shaw started the opportunity with a cross that found Asante's feet inside the box.
Michael O'Keeffe made six saves for Fairfield, which allowed the sophomore to register his third shutout of the season. O'Keeffe entered the week as the MAAC's top goaltender in goals against average, a number which dropped to 0.85 after allowing one goal in two games this weekend.
The Stags get back on the pitch on Friday, October 15 when they host siena College at 7 pm. The game will be played at Lessing Field, beginning at 7 pm.
