The all-time leading scorer in Fairfield women’s basketball history, Gail Strumpf-Cheney '01 enters her third season as the Stags’ assistant coach
Working primarily with the post players, Strumpf-Cheney has been instrumental with the development of several young players. Casey Smith finished just three points shy of tying Fairfield’s rookie scoring record in 2015, while Kelsey Carey also developed into an integral part of the team after seeing just 78 minutes during her freshman season.
In total, two front court players have been named to an All-Conference team, including Smith and Katie Cizynski who was named to the All-MAAC First team after averaging 16.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest.
Before returning to her alma-mater, Strumpf-Cheney spent the prior two seasons as the head varsity basketball coach at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, Conn. while also serving as the Stags' color commentator on radio broadcasts during 2012-13. Prior to Sacred Heart Academy, Strumpf-Cheney spent seven years as the head varsity basketball coach at Woodland Regional.
Strumpf-Cheney is one of the most decorated women's basketball players in Stags history. A three-time First Team All-MAAC selection, Strumpf-Cheney is Fairfield's all-time leading scorer with 1,873 points. She also hauled in 1,106 rebounds in her four-years, ranking second on that list. Strumpf-Cheney also played professionally in the National Women's Basketball League as well as in Germany.
In 2010, Strumpf-Cheney was inducted into the Fairfield University Alumni Association Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2012, she was inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and elected into the MAAC Basketball Hall of Fame Honor Roll.
