Biography

2020-21: Jonas Vergin played in the first three games of the 2020-21 season, starting against Canisius, Quinnipiac, and Saint Peter’s. He was on the pitch for the team’s first clean sheet of the season, a 2-0 decision over Canisius in the season opener. Vergin secured his only shot during the Quinnipiac match, an attempt which required a goalkeeper save.

2019: Vergin was another component in Fairfield’s highly-successful defensive unit that led the MAAC with a conference-low 22 goals allowed which led to a conference-best 1.22 goals against average. The defender found time in 14 of the team’s 17 games with 11 of those contests coming as a starter. He contributed to the team’s six shutouts with quality time among the back four. He served as a reserve in three games, namely Iona, Siena, and Canisius. Vergin made occasional runs to the offensive third of the pitch, registering a shot on goal against Saint Joseph’s and a second shot in the Rider game.

2018: Vergin continued his emergence as one of the premier defenders in the MAAC, enough so that he was selected as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year by vote of the head coaches. Vergin'a ability also was proven enough to collect All-MAAC first team accolades, his second straight MAAC postseason honor in as many seasons. His ability to patrol the Stags' defensive third and hinder any progress put forth by the opposition makes him an invaluable member of the Fairfield defensive corps. His ability to move up front and serve as an added offensive threat also keeps him in the lineup, taking three shots with one being on goal over his 18 appearances in 2018.

2017: Vergin made an impact from the moment he joined the program, picking up 18 appearances in his first season with the Stags. The defender was among the starting 11 in all but one of those games, coming off the bench in the team’s conference win over Robert Morris. It was one of four shots on goal that he took during the season, also releasing two attempts against Siena and one more versus Quinnipiac. Vergin  capped his freshman season with a berth to the MAAC All-Rookie team.

Before Fairfield: Vergin competed with Hamburger SV for seven years transferring from the U-12 through the U-19, completing competition with the 2016-17 seasons. In that 2016-17 campaign, Vergin accumulated over 1400 minutes of play in 29 appearances. He served as a team captain for Hamburger SV as a member of the U-12 through the U-17 teams.
