Austin, Duncan Pace Stags in Opening Round of MAAC Championship

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Eric Austin and Kevin Duncan both sit one stroke off the pace to lead the Fairfield University men’s golf team in the opening round of the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Stags are currently tied for sixth place on a densely packed leaderboard following the first of three rounds this weekend at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

Austin and Duncan each carded a 75 (+1) to sit one shot behind individual leaders Ryan Rodriguez of Saint Peter’s and Jake Holt of Siena. Austin and Duncan both holed a team-leading three birdies as a part of their opening-round performances. Alex Ferrante (+9), Thomas Urciuoli (+12) and Alex Taylor (+15) also hit the course today for the Stags.

Fairfield shares sixth place on the team leaderboard with Manhattan after both teams posted a 315 (+27) aggregate score. The Stags are just six strokes behind first-place Siena’s 309 (+21). Monmouth is slotted at second place at 312 (+24) while Iona, Rider and Saint Peter’s all turned in a 313 (+25) this afternoon.

The Stags will be back on the course tomorrow for second round action from Lake Buena Vista. The 54-hole championship concludes on Sunday with the action set to broadcast live on ESPN3 beginning at 10 a.m.
