FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman swimmer Colleen Young earned her first career medal on Sunday afternoon after finishing in third place in the 100m breaststroke at the Paralympic Games.
Fotimakhon Amilova of Uzbekistan set a world record in the event with a time of 1:12.45 to grab gold. The silver medal went to Rebecca Redfern of Great Britain, while Young finished in third with a time of 1:17.02 to earn the bronze medal.
The freshman is part of Team USA that has won a total of 39 medals thus far, fourth most at the Paralympics. Young is not finished in Rio as she will swim the 50 freestyle on Wednesday and compete in the 100 backstroke on Saturday.
