Two Future Stags Look to Compete in Rio

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Two members of the Fairfield University Swimming and Diving Class of 2020 will look to show off their talents in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this summer.

Colleen Young of St. Louis, Missouri will look to  make her second appearance in the Paralympic games after she  competed at the London games back in 2012. The incoming freshman holds American records in the 50 yard breaststroke, 100 yard breaststroke, 200 yard breaststroke, 50 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke, 200 meter breaststroke, and 200 yard individual medley. Young even holds a World Record in the 200 meter breaststroke.

This year’s Paralympic Trials will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina from June 30th to July 2nd. If she is able to qualify, Young will head to Rio for the 2016 Paralympic Games beginning on September 7th.

“Representing the USA at any meet or event is just this amazing feeling. It's one of the biggest thrills for me to be swimming with a USA cap that has our flag on it with my last name underneath. It’s just simply incredible and I'm so glad that I get to do it as often as I do,” added the future Stag.

Ore Cherebin from St. George, Grenada will represent her country in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. The incoming freshman has already qualified and will compete for the first time in the Olympics, but has garnered the Grenadian colors at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the FINA World Championships in 2013 and 2015, and the 2015 Pan American games.

Cherebin will be competing in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke events. “Being an Olympian is a huge honor and means more than words can describe. I almost can't believe it.  It's a dream come true to be able to be part of team Grenada in Rio,” said Cherebin. The 2016 Olympics will kick off on August 5th in Rio.

Along with Fairfield University Swimming and Diving Head Coach Janelle Atkinson-Wignall as an ESPN Caribbean Commentator for the Olympic Games, the Stags will be well represented in Rio.
