FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s tennis team will play in the Yale Invitational beginning Saturday at 10:00 am. The Stags will start off playing Marist in the morning, and then face off against Stony Brook at 2:00 pm. On Sunday, they will match up against host Yale to end the weekend slate.
The Stags just returned from a three match road trip to North Carolina in which they faced Davidson, Charlotte, and Gardner-Webb. Most recently against Gardner-Webb, Fairfield dropped 6-1. The team managed just one doubles victory, at the No. 2 spot, Jeffrey Rodgers and Anthony Caputo teamed up for a 6-3 win. Fairfield also got just one win in singles action. Ofir Solomon won at the second spot in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Yale is 7-4 this season and winners of three straight. Back on February 27, they swept Bryant in a double-header with scores of 7-0 and 4-1. In the first match, Ziqi Wang won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. And at first doubles, Fedor Andrienko and Stefan Doehler paired up for a 7-6 win.
Marist comes into the weekend with an overall record of 5-2 and is currently riding a four match winning streak. On February 28, the Red Foxes topped Fordham 4-1 and Wagner 5-0. On the day, Justin Chanthalangsy earned a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 singles victory over Wagner and a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 doubles victory over Fordham. The sophomore was also named the MAAC Player of the Week back on March 2.
Stony Brook owns a 2-2 record this spring and fell to NJIT and Army West Point in their last two outings. Against Army, the Seawolves lost by a score of 4-3. After dropping the doubles point, they managed three singles victories, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win. Stony Brook got singles wins at the No. 1, 2, and 4 spots.
After the weekend, Fairfield will travel to Niagara for their first conference match of the spring on Saturday, March 19.
