Monica Yajima Named MAAC Player of the Week

EDISON, N.J. – Fairfield University senior Monica Yajima was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after winning twice in singles and once in doubles in the Stags’ three matches against Hofstra, LIU Brooklyn, and Marist this past week.

In the match against Hofstra on March 28, Yajima defeated Sarah Bowen, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 1 spot. In Fairfield’s 5-2 victory over MAAC foe Marist on April 1, Yajima led the Stags with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over the Red Foxes’ Karlene Pang in the No. 1 singles spot before teaming up with Carolina Koladzyn to defeat Pang and Sabrina Tahir, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Yajima also had several matches that were not completed due to rain during the week.

So far this season, Yajima is 11-5 in singles play and 10-7 in doubles. The three-time MAAC Player of the Year has collected 133 combined victories over the last four seasons which is good for third all-time at Fairfield. She is just seven combined victories away from surpassing Dana Postupack for second all-time and 17 away from breaking Paulina Rys’ record of 149. This is Yajima’s sixth time earning MAAC Weekly honors throughout her career and her second this season.

Fairfield (5-7) returns to action on April 5 when the Stags travel to Niagara.
