Sharissa Ryan Named MAAC Player of the Week

EDISON, N.J. – Fairfield University senior Sharissa Ryan was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after posted three singles and two doubles victories in the Stags’ three matches against Manhattan, Siena, and Sacred Heart this past week.

In the 7-0 win over Manhattan on April 10, Ryan defeated the Jaspers’ Gabby Leon, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot. Ryan teamed up with Victoria Pirrello to down Manhattan duo Caitlin Brickette and Salva Pizano, 8-1, in the No. 2 doubles spot.

When the Stags swept Siena, 7-0, on April 12, Ryan picked up a, 6-4, 6-0, win over the Saints’ Carly Holloway at No. 2 singles. Ryan partnered with Allison Radde to down Siena’s Jessica Macaluso and Cassandra Braz, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Against Sacred Heart on April 14, Ryan clipped the Pioneers’ Gabriela Kaldan, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot.  She battled but fell with partner Pirrello, 8-7(3) to Sacred Heart’s Katie DeRienzo and Nicole Rydzewski in the No. 2 doubles spot.

So far this season, Ryan is 11-8 in singles play and 15-11 in doubles. The 2012 MAAC Women’s Tennis Championship Most Outstanding Performer has collected 131 combined victories over her last four seasons, good for fourth all-time at Fairfield. This is Ryan’s fourth time earning MAAC Weekly honors throughout her career and her second this season.

Fairfield (9-8) returns to action on April 19 when the Stags host St. Peter’s for Senior Day on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts at 3pm. Prior to the match, the team will honor the contributions of their seniors.

The first phase of construction on the Rafferty Stadium project has gotten underway. Due to the construction, the Walsh Athletic Center Parking Lot will be closed. Fans are asked to utilize the parking lots at Dolan Commons, Fairfield Prep, the rear of Alumni Hall, and Jogues Hall when they visit Stags Country for a game.
