Women's Tennis Hosts Fordham Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team hosts Fordham University on Friday, January 31 at 7pm at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club in Stamford, Conn.

Fairfield vs. Fordham: Friday's contest will be the first time the Stags and Rams have faced one another since January 28, 2012. In that match, Fairfield fell to Fordham, 5-2, at Stamford Indoor. At No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Monica Yajima and Sharissa Ryan came away with victories. Yajima defeated Fordham's Simidian, 6-1, 6-4, while Ryan defeated the Rams' Ali, 6-4, 5-7, 10-3. Another highlight of the evening was the performance of Fairfield's No. 2 doubles team, Victoria Pirrello and Allison Radde. The pair played well for the first time together but eventually fell to the Fordham team of Angie Dabue and Bella Genkina, 8-6.

A Look at the Rams: The Fordham University women's tennis team is 1-0 on the season so far. On September 21, the Rams defeated Manhattan, 7-0. In their fall season, Fordham competed in four tournaments including the Stony Brook Invitational, Eastern Championship, USTA Invitational, and the ITA Regionals. Friday's match will be the 2014 spring season opener for the Rams.   

Last Time Out: The Stags opened their spring campaign with a tough 5-2 loss to St. John's University on January 24 at the USTA National Tennis Center. Freshman Kaila Nelson and senior Carolina Koladzyn posted singles victories for the Stags. Nelson picked up the win at No. 6 singles by outlasting Stephanie Elgegren, 6-4, 0-6, 10-6. At No. 4 singles, Koladzyn notched a 6-3, 6-4 win over Diamond Adams. At No. 2 singles, Nastya Polyakova clipped Ryan, 6-0, 6-3. The Red Storm sealed the win at No. 3 singles when Anna Morozova topped Radde, 7-5, 6-0. At No. 1 singles, senior Yajima was edged by Khrystyna Pavlyuk, 7-6, 6-2. In doubles, Elgegren and Polyakova picked up a 6-0 win at third spot over Pirrello and Nelson while Arnaudova and Morozova posted a 6-0 win over Ryan and Radde at the second spot.

Looking Ahead: After Friday's contest, the Fairfield women's tennis team (1-1) will travel to Providence, R.I. to compete against Providence on February 8.
