Cross Country Running for a Cause at Saturday's Le

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's and women's cross country teams will once again be running for more than just personal bests at the 37th Annual Fr. Victor F. Leeber, S.J. Invitational on September 21. During their final home meet of the season, they will be running to bring awareness to colon cancer.

On Saturday, the Stags will be wearing blue jerseys and blue socks, the symbolic color of colon cancer awareness, as they traverse the North Benson Road campus during the Leeber Invitational. The Stags will also be collecting donations at the event which begins at 11am at Lessing Field.

This is the second year in which the cross country team will be running for a cause. The Stags raised more than $3,000 for Susan G. Komen For The Cure during the fundraiser they held in conjunction with the 2012 Leeber Invitational.

"After seeing so much success raising money for breast cancer awareness last year, our team wanted to continue the tradition this year," said senior captain Molly Leidig. "Colon cancer, unfortunately, is a disease that has affected our team in more ways than one. It only seemed fitting to help out a cause focused on raising colon cancer awareness and detection, and helping those affected. Get Your Rear in Gear fit this vision and that is why we chose to support their cause."

In addition to Saturday's events, the Stags will be collecting donations on the third floor of the Barone Campus Center on September 18 and on September 19 from 4-7pm. If you can't make it to campus and would like to make a donation in support of the Colon Cancer Coalition and the Get Your Rear In Gear initiative, visit GetYourRearInGear.com/donate.
