Yajima Earns Third-Straight MAAC Player of the Yea

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced the 2013 women’s tennis All-MAAC Teams and awards the evening.  Junior Monica Yajima was named MAAC Player of the Year for her third consecutive season, while herself and five others garnered spots on the All-MAAC First and Second Teams.
 
Yajima finished the regular season with an overall record of 18-9 and a perfect 7-0 mark in MAAC play.  She ended the regular season with a record of 14-4 in first singles play.  The junior also earned a spot on the All-MAAC Second team at No. 1 Doubles with her partner Carolina Koladzyn.
 
Earning spots on Second Team for their regular season singles performance are juniors Sharissa Ryan and Victoria Pirrello, and senior Nikki Jackson.  Ryan finished with a 4-1 mark in the MAAC tallying a place at No. 2 singles while classmate Pirrello competed primarily at No. 5 singles and compiled a conference record of 5-1. In Jackson’s final season, she finished a perfect 6-0 in MAAC play earning the award in the six spot. 
 
Rounding out the Second Team awards is the duo of Ryan and sophomore Allison Radde at No. 2 doubles.  The pair went 3-1 in conference play and share the honor with twosomes from Loyola Md. and Niagara.
 
One student-athlete on women’s tennis were recognized for their academic accomplishments.  To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.  Sophomore Emma Samson earned a spot on the All-MAAC Academic Team.
 
Fairfield will play in the semifinal tomorrow morning at 10am against Loyola Maryland at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J.
